Biodiversity Solutions

In Search of Native Oysters

Native Oysters
By Sue Burton (Pembrokeshire Marine SAC Officer)

Biodiversity Solutions is funding volunteer Seasearch divers to dive in the Milford Haven Waterway this weekend to help gather data for a native oyster regeneration project.  Seasearch divers  are volunteer sports divers who have an interest in what they’re seeing under water, want to learn more and want to help protect the marine environment. The divers will be collecting samples of oysters and also assessing their habitat to try to establish if it is in a good state to support higher numbers of oysters.  Native oysters used to thrive in the Waterway and many different sectors including environmental and fisheries want to see increased numbers once again.  West Wales Shellfisherman’s Association Ltd and the Pembrokeshire Marine Special Area of Conservation Officer are helping to support the dive project, and they will use the outputs to inform their native oyster regeneration partnership work.
